We are looking to move to Del Mar (thereabouts.. perhaps Solana, La Jolla, or Rancho Santa Fe).

Both my wife and I lived in SD for ten years as singles. Since getting married, we moved up to the Bay Area then down to LA. Now we have three little children (all under 6).

So, all we know of SD was from a single's perspective. I'd like to get the perspective of families with small, pre-teen or teen kids on how living in these areas of SD effect their daily lives...

Things like...

  • how bad is local traffic getting your kids to school
  • Do you feel comfortable with the folks that inhabit your local parks
  • How convenient are things like.. grocery shopping, Target, etc
  • Is your neighborhood a walking neighborhood.. do you know many of your neighbors? Do your kids play out in the street?
  • Are those extracurricular activities close by and easy to get to (art class, music, karate, gymnastics, etc, etc)
  • Youth sports (soccer, basketball, etc) held locally or do you have to drive all over
  • Public transit to downtown.. easy, hassle?

Also, we're looking for neighborhoods that are much more family friendly.. slightly larger lots. East of 5 plenty fine. We're not pretentious... want good neighbors. Price range: $1.5 - $2.5M

Any thoughts, opinions, etc would be greatly appreciated!

del mar, was there yesterday. the surf does not always break just right and you have to wait. for anybody moving from chicago in dead winter, this is major stuff. also you can leave your stuff on the front porch and wont get ripped off, now that is just plain boring if you are from south side cisero area.

  • how bad is local traffic getting your kids to school: There can be some pretty bad traffic on surface streets you would use to get the kids to school, particularly from June to September when the Fair and Races are going on. Rest of the year, it's not much of an issue.
  • Do you feel comfortable with the folks that inhabit your local parks: The city parks are very nice, clean, and family oriented. No bums sleeping on benches or people camping out.
  • How convenient are things like.. grocery shopping, Target, etc: If you truly live in the Village of Del Mar, this can be an issue. I think the closest Target is about 10 miles away in Encinitas. Grocery stores and the like are on Del Mar Heights Roads east of I-5. There is a pricey market in the Del Mar Village, but most people don't do their weekly shopping there. It's for wine and cheese and stuff like that.
  • Is your neighborhood a walking neighborhood.. do you know many of your neighbors? Do your kids play out in the street?: Del Mar can be pretty hilly, with narrow streets and no sidewalks. However, people still walk quite a bit to the beach. It's a pretty close knit community, but there is also a lot of younger families with new money moving into town and changing things a bit. They tend to keep to themselves more, less community interaction, I've found.
  • Are those extracurricular activities close by and easy to get to (art class, music, karate, gymnastics, etc, etc): The city does sponsor some classes, and there is a Boys and Girls Club up in Solana Beach and an even bigger YMCA in Encinitas that have a broad range of kids programs like you describe.
  • Youth sports (soccer, basketball, etc) held locally or do you have to drive all over: Yes, there is Del Mar little league and youth soccer, with games played in town.
  • Public transit to downtown.. easy, hassle? I guess the only real option for this is the Coaster train, which runs into and out of San Diego. It does not stop in Del Mar, though. Your best option would be north to Solana Beach or south to Sorrento Valley to catch it.

Hands down- The San Diego County Fair- and there's isn't anything else that is really close.

A distant second is the fact that you are paying quite a bit for anything you find there.

I've suggested 4S Ranch to alot of folks on here (15 min. drive to Del Mar). You are close enough to the ocean, but not so close that traffic and crowds become an issue. Nice parks, Nice Neighborhoods (safe and walkable), not overcrowded, alot of transplants (can be good and bad), close to the 15 and 56 but not so close that you get alot of traffic, great schools. Sadly, I thinks it just a matter of time before they turn up a bunch of shopping centers and build more developements.

Tell Me Something Bad About Daily Life in Del Mar...when you fart, everyone hears it.

As an outsider, if I could afford it, that's the location I would live in. The house I plan on renting in Sorrento Valley is owned and being leased by a guy who just snagged a house there and moving his family to Del Mar.

For the record, Torrey Pines High School is only about 3 miles (not 6 as another poster said) from the downtown village of Del Mar, according to Google maps. It's even closer to the eastern edge of the city (like off Mango Drive, etc.) where most of the students live.

I lived in Del Mar briefly, in the real DM, and I found people are pretty snobby.

Del Mar has a high concentration of 80-year-old porsche driving men with 40-year old silicon-enhanced, botox-masked wives eating lunch at En Fuego, so that's a problem.
